National Update on the Second Amendment

When it comes to the Second Amendment, it can be easy to think we live in a vacuum here in Minnesota.

We certainly share your frustration with House Leadership’s refusal to move substantive pro gun bills while at the same time allowing legislation that presents long-term obstacles for defending the Second Amendment.

But politics runs on momentum, and that is never more true than when it comes to gun rights!

That is why we think it is important for you to know what is going on in other states across the country when it comes to Second Amendment progress.

As you probably know, gun owners in neighboring North Dakota gave the clear order to their legislature just a few weeks ago and became the 13th Constitutional Carry state!

That major expansion of gun rights will go into effect August 1st, and they’ll enjoy complete freedom to exercise their right to Keep and Bear Arms!

Our neighbors to the south in Iowa, led by our sister organization Iowa Gun Owners, have made incredible strides forward, too!

They’ve spent election after election hacking out the anti-gun Senate majority blockading gun bills, and just last week cleared their last legislative hurdle for Stand-Your-Ground law and that bill is now headed to their Governor.

While South Dakota’s governor Daugaard vetoed their Constitutional Carry bill, it’s widely anticipated that Iowa’s governor Branstad will sign Stand-Your-Ground into law.

Iowa’s anticipated Stand-Your-Ground passage is important for gun owners nationwide.

The Trayvon Martin/George Zimmerman case in 2012 left states very hesitant to pass self-defense strengthening legislation like Stand-Your-Ground or enhanced Castle Doctrine.

And when our friends at the Missouri Firearms Coalition became the first state since 2011 to pass Stand-Your-Ground, it left many in the gun rights community wondering if it was a one-time fluke or the start of a national trend.

But Iowa Gun Owners and their leadership team have proven the latter to be true!

Restoring Second Amendment rights by passing major gun-rights legislation like this is never easy.

In fact, after passing both Stand-Your-Ground and Constitutional Carry simultaneously in Missouri, their anti-gun governor vetoed the bill.

But the pro-gun majorities in the Missouri House and Senate went to bat for gun owners and overrode the governor’s veto and passed the largest state expansion of gun rights in modern history!

And down in Georgia, our good friends at Georgia Gun Owners have been fighting tooth and nail against a weak-kneed legislature to get a REAL Constitutional Carry bill passed into law.

Despite backroom compromises between in-state establishment “gun groups” and governor Nathan Deal, Georgia Gun Owners is growing by hundreds and thousands and we anticipate a Constitutional Carry law to be passed there in the next few years.

Across our border in Wisconsin, pro-gun legislators have introduced Constitutional Carry legislation and already have a staggering 40+ co-sponsors on the bill!

And Site, that’s just a handful of the states that are fighting with all they’ve got to see their gun rights restored.

The successes in those states WILL be mirrored here in Minnesota as well
.

But we need to work harder and get more and more Minnesotans involved in this fight.

We need to send more emails, make more phone calls, sign more petitions and POUR THE PRESSURE on the legislature to force them to stand tall for gun owners and pass REAL pro-gun reforms in Minnesota.

One easy way for you to do that is to contact Representative Tony Cornish and tell him to move HF309 (Constitutional Carry) out of his Public Safety committee and into the Rules committee IMMEDIATELY!

This is the first step.

This NEEDS to happen if we’re to see Constitutional Carry passed in our state and see Second Amendment freedoms restored to law abiding gun owners.

State after state is passing these crucial pro-gun reforms and it’s time for Minnesota to join them.

Minnesota’s days of being at the back of the pack are numbered.

Our days of being embarrassed by weak-kneed leadership are numbered.

The time for Constitutional Carry is RIGHT NOW!

So please contact Representative Cornish right away and tell him to move HF309 out of his Public Safety Committee and into the Rules committee immediately.

We can’t thank you enough for your hard work and activism.

Stay tuned and we’ll have more updates for you later in the week.

P.S. Second Amendment freedoms are SURGING across the country after anti-gun majorities were destroyed by gun owners in the 2016 elections.

Constitutional Carry is on the move in the legislatures of Utah, Ohio, Wisconsin, Iowa, Indiana, Michigan, Pennsylvania, Virginia, North Carolina, Georgia, Alabama and Texas!

And that’s AFTER it passed West Virginia, Idaho, New Hampshire, Missouri and just a few weeks ago in North Dakota.

It’s going to happen here in Minnesota too but I need your help.

I need you to take a moment and contact Representative Tony Cornish, the Chair of the Public Safety Committee and tell him to MOVE HF309 (Constitutional Carry) out of his committee and into the Rules committee so we can see passage in the House.
